Northern
Right Whale Photo Album
With all of the other whale species
we have a chance of seeing out on Jeffrey's Ledge, it's the Northern Right
Whale who has the most meaning. These whales typically show up late summer
to fall. With only an estimated 350-400 left in the world this is an extremely
endangered species that we risk losing. They were named Right Whales because
they were the right whale to hunt back when whaling was in it's prime.
They were hunted almost to the point of extinction until they were finally
declared a protected and endangered species. Unfortunately, they have not
yet rebounded and still face many threats included ship strikes, pollution,
and fishing gear entanglements. I've been fortunate enough to see approximately
a dozen of these animals (the majority in the 2008 season alone) in my
9 years of watching whales, but for a lot of people they never get the
chance. All photos were taken on the Granite
State Whale Watch out of Rye, NH.
